Cop knocked stone cold - ... attacker dead

An unidentified robber, who reportedly knocked a police constable unconscious with a large wrench, was shot and killed by the cop's colleague in Barrett Town, St James, on Tuesday.

Reports by the police are that shortly after 10 p.m., a team of officers attached to the Barrett Town Police Station responded to a report of a break-in that was in progress at a premises in the community.

A police constable, who entered the house through a back door, was reportedly hit on the head with a wrench by an unidentified man, who was hiding inside. He is said to be one of two robbers who gained access to the house by going through a window.

The constable, who was hit with the wrench, reportedly fell to the ground motionless. The robber reportedly attempted to hit the unconscious cop a second time, but was shot by another cop.

The alleged robber died on the spot while the injured cop was taken to hospital for treatment. A motor car, which was parked outside the premises, was seized by the cops.

In the meanwhile, residents living in Barrett Town have commended the swift actions of the police. They said that the dead man was one half of a duo who has been breaking houses in the community . Police said that the second man ran from the house and escaped.
