Accompong Maroons elect new leader
Richard Curry yesterday defeated incumbent Colonel Ferron Williams in the election to select the new leader of the Accompong Town Maroons.
Curry beat Williams by 281 votes in Thursday's polls, held at nine polling divisions across four parishes.
Williams, who won the last election by just more than 30 votes, had expressed confidence in retaining leadership, but Curry, a newcomer, said he and his team did a lot of work in pulling off this victory.
"We did our work in letting the Maroons understand that message, and for the most part, we have now showed people that we are capable to steer the Maroon vision, and create the path to driving our own prosperity, and economic sustainability," Curry told THE WEEKEND STAR.
At the final count, Curry ended with 681 votes, while Williams tallied 400. The three other candidates were Meredith Rowe (98 votes), Sheldon Wallace (30 votes), and Robert Carley (29 votes).
Leonard Salmon, director of elections at Accompong Town, said that the day's proceedings were incident free, and flowed according to plan.
"Everybody who came out to vote abided by the COVID-19 protocols. We did not have any hiccups, only a few hurdles, and we managed to cross them," Salmon stated.
