Witness mocks attorney in One Don Gang trial
A former top tier member of the One Don Gang yesterday raised eyebrows in the Home Circuit Court after he called one of the defence attorneys an "estate lawyer".
"You know say you a waa estate lawyer, you a waa estate lawyer," the ex-gangster muttered eliciting laughter and shock.
But attorney-at-law Courtney Rowe, who had been cross-examining the witness via video link, said that he was not going to entertain the ex-gangster. Chief Justice Bryan Sykes also quickly intervened and told the witness to calm down.
Prior to the witness' outburst, Rowe had suggested to the witness that he was motivated by revenge to testify about his client, defendant Marco Miller, otherwise called Ezi. Rowe told the witness that the revenge was in relation to a dispute he claimed they had over a woman.
On Wednesday, Rowe claimed that the witness had been 'keeping malice' with his client since 2016 after accusing him of impregnating his on-and-off girlfriend. The lawyer said that had caused a rift between the two men. But yesterday, Rowe, who had even brought the woman in question to court for her to be identified by the witness, expanded on his defence. He suggested to the witness that his reason for testifying against his client was that it gave him a second chance to exact his revenge.
But the witness who was not amused and asked " When was my first? I disagree so please tell me when was my first."
"The first time is when you say you went in search for him to kill him since you want to know," the lawyer replied. The witness then admitted that he had testified that he and others had been sent by the reputed leader Andre 'Blackman' Bryan to search for Miller and have him killed. Rowe then told him that his revenge was for his client getting his girlfriend pregnant.
"I would like for you to put her on the stand and let her tell the truth," the witness then remarked. But Rowe told him that "Having failed to kill him [Ezi] this is your second opportunity."
But the witness rejected his suggestion. The lawyer further suggested that he was jealous over the woman's relationship with his client.
The witness asked how he could be jealous of the woman when he was aware that she had been dating both Miller and another person. It was then that he labelled the attorney an 'estate lawyer'.
