Teejay excites at Sumfest fun day
WESTERN BUREAU:
Teejay's dancehall anthem, Drift, filled the air at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall, Montego Bay, St James, as throngs of persons turned out for Reggae Sumfest Fun Day/Community Fest yesterday.
Teejay, who hails from Bottom Pen, Glendevon in Montego Bay, warmly welcomed a multitude of children who flocked around him at the thrilling fun day
"I don't come to perform in Montego Bay often enough, and so as soon as schools reopen I am planning to do school tour in the parish of St James just to give back," he told THE STAR after presenting a number of tablets on stage on behalf of Flow.
He emphasised the importance of this endeavour, stating, "You barely see stars or celebrities come through the schools in St James and give back".
Teejay also mentioned providing financial assistance to students in the western region, addressing topics such as proper hygiene and discussing future prospects.
Reflecting on his own experiences of wiping car windows on the streets and relying on taxi drivers in the community for lunch money, the Up Top Boss said he was moved after parents approached him at the event, seeking assistance with school uniforms and tablets for their children. He said it was "touching because I know where I am coming from".
Yesterday's fun day marked the start of Downsound Entertainment week-long Reggae Sumfest in the second city. The festival is celebrating 30 years.
Suneyna Francis, the pre-events coordinator at Downsound Entertainment, said the turnout for the fun day exceeded all expectations. She said the kiddie's village played a vital role in entertaining the young attendees.
The village boasted an exciting array of rides and slides, including the merry-go-round, bounce-about, and zipline.
