Jamaica sees spike in leptospirosis cases and deaths

Jamaica is seeing a jump in leptospirosis infections in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, with the Ministry of Health and Wellness confirming more cases and deaths linked to the disease.

The ministry says there are now seventy one suspected, probable, or confirmed cases across the island. Of that number, twenty six have been confirmed.

Twelve people have died, and seven of those deaths were confirmed as leptospirosis related.

Health officials say teams are keeping a close watch on St James, St Ann, and St Elizabeth, which have the highest case numbers. St James has fifteen cases, St Ann has twelve, and St Elizabeth has eight.

The ministry is again urging Jamaicans to protect themselves by wearing proper gear during clean up, avoiding flood water, securing food and water, and keeping their surroundings clean. It says leptospirosis is preventable, treatable, and survivable if caught early.

The ministry also reports that no other communicable diseases are currently of concern, with dengue and influenza numbers staying below the usual levels for this time of year.
