Flemmings named USL Player of the Month
TAMPA, Florida (CMC ):
Reggae Boy Junior Flemmings has picked up the award for Championship Player of the Month for August in the United Soccer League (USL), after netting seven goals from six games during the month.
The 24-year-old is the league's leading scorer with 12 goals, an output that has ensured Phoenix Rising FC the top spot in Group B on 26 points - seven points clear of San Diego Loyal.
"I think it's a collective effort, a team effort first and foremost," Flemmings said of the honour.
"It's just a testimony to how hard we've worked over the first couple of weeks, and I think we just keep going. There's no individual award without the team, and we keep moving forward as a team."
The highlight of the month for Flemmings was a hat-trick on August 8 when Phoenix beat New Mexico United 5-2, this is after registering 15 goals and seven assists.
"I think it's just confidence. As everyone knows, when you have that high level of confidence, anything is possible," Flemmings said.
"Things are just happening naturally. When I get the ball, I know what to do, and it just keeps going."
Phoenix head coach Rick Schantz hailed Flemmings's contribution, labelling the former Tivoli Gardens frontman as "clinical".
"Junior's had a fantastic month," he said. "I think that you can see, individually, he's been very dangerous, creates a lot of opportunities, scores a lot of goals.
"His finishing has been clinical this season. I expect that usually when he's going against two defenders or three defenders it would be difficult, but he shows you how hard he works and how competitive he is week in and week out."
Flemmings is being chased by fellow Reggae Boy Dane Kelly, who has scored 10 times this season for Charlotte Independence, while Jamaicans Neco Brett (seven) and Romario Williams (six) are also among the leading marksmen this season.
