Arnett dent Chapelton Maroons’ perfect record
Chapelton Maroons suffered their first defeat of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season, going down 1-0 to Arnett Gardens FC at Turners Oval on Sunday.
Defeat knocked Chapelton Maroons off the top of the table.
Roderick Granville's 57th-minute strike was enough to give the visitors all three points.
However, Chapelton's head coach Donovan Duckie said he anticipated a flat performance, as the players were showing complacency in training all week, and it's a "good loss".
"The performance today was lacklustre. We started flat and it was evident from midweek. There were some things we saw psychologically (in training) and today we saw the same things," Duckie said. But it's one of those days when you get a wake-up call and you have to come back and fix things on the training pitch.
"So there are some things you call a good lose because in order to win the war, you have to lose some small battles. This is one of those battles that we have lost and it's psychological. So they won't need any motivation to play the next game," he said.
Arnett controlled most of the game and deservingly took the lead when Granville fired home at the back post.
Fabian Reid and Rushane Thompson both came close to increasing Arnett's lead on a couple of occasions, and Shai Smith missed a 'sitter' for the away team.
Chapelton had a couple half chances, but neither Robinho Gordon nor Marco Filho could make the most of the opportunities.
After claiming back-to-back victories, Arnett's coach Philip Williams said they are improving.
"The team is running into form. The players who arrived late they are getting fit and the results are there to show that we are getting better," he said.
TOP SPOT
Meanwhile, Racing FC reclaimed top spot in the league after a 4-2 win over Treasure Beach. Javaughn Cole (61st, 72nd) scored a brace for Racing, with Nickyle Ellis (47th) and DeAndre Johnson (85th) getting the other goals.
