Cambridge reflect as journey ends
DESPITE kissing goodbye to the round of 32, Cambridge High School's head coach, Garrett Dennis, acknowledged the young players' efforts and plans to do better next season.
Zone B's Cambridge were booted out of the first round with a 2-1 defeat against zone leaders Rusea's High at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay yesterday.
"These are youngsters and we would have worked hard with them to get to this level," Dennis noted.
"We will maintain 80 per cent of the team next year and the team is aiming for a better performance next season," he added.
The result means Rusea's end on 24 points, finishing ahead of Frome on 17 and Cambridge, 14.
"We missed some chances that really cost us. We could have taken the lead but we missed a penalty, but such is life," added Dennis.
Former champions Rusea's scored first, courtesy of Omarion Jemmison in the 24th minute.
However, a handball by Rusea's Michael Christie gave Cambridge some hope in the 38th minute. Kiron Malcolm then scored to level the scores.
Rusea's were again penalised for another handball by Jemmison. However, this time Cambridge's Jayr Moore's shot was denied by goalkeeper Sadrick Antoine.
Cambridge could not slow down Rusea's and in the 74th minute, Corey Palmer weaved his way through the defence then powered a shot into the goal, shattering the dreams of Cambridge and ending their season.
Assistant head coach of Rusea's, Jason Fiddis, said the team has a tendency to under-perform against weaker opponents.
"We tend to drop our game to the lower team. Today, in the first 22 minutes, we got five chances to score and didn't compensate," said Fiddis.
"Eventually, we picked up and started to play better football in the second half and we saw the result," added Fiddis.
The round of 32 begins on Saturday and after two painful losses, Zone A's Maldon finally got it right with a 5-0 thrashing to Green Pond High at Green Pond.
Herbert Morrison were unable to test Cornwall College, who sent them packing with a 2-0 victory at Cornwall College.
Maldon remain second on 19 points and will join Cornwall College, on 28, in the second round. Herbert Morrison fell to fourth, sitting on 13 points, while Irwin High are on 14 points.
