Tivick returns after long hiatus
Dancehall artiste Tivick is back on the scene after an almost five-year hiatus.
The entertainer took time off to set up a mobile car wash business as a way to earn additional income to invest in his music career. His return is encouraged by an opportunity to work with Bramma's GGOD Records imprint.
"I'm working on new music, which we're looking to release next month," Tivick told THE STAR. "My fans can expect the unexpected from me as I'm coming with a lot of surprises and new stuff." Tivick also sees now as the ideal time to resume his music endeavours as he believes new acts have been flourishing throughout the pandemic and people are now embracing new sounds.
Given name Jahvanie Brown, Tivick embarked on his musical journey in 2010 while attending Tarrant High School. He said he would often showcase his skills as a lyricist and disc jockey at school functions.
"I decided to start recording when fellow classmates said I sounded good and that I should put the songs I performed in front of the school on rhythms," he said. "Even the principal came to me and said I should pursue music professionally, so I decided to take it seriously."
His catalogue includes steamy numbers including Take Over (featuring I-Oshin), Wet Rush, and Good, grimy releases like Dweet An Dun; and an ode to his mother, Mommy Afi Rich.
"I was inspired by Jah Vinci and Blak Ryno, so there was a slight comparison where people said they have an issue with me sounding so much like them. However, people still like my music," he said. He has encountered hiccups on his journey, including when his social media accounts were hacked. His 2022 agenda includes rebuilding his social media presence. He is also scheduled to be an opening act on Bramma's upcoming overseas tour.
