Cop says he was attacked by ‘Duppy Truck’
A former member of the One Don Gang, who is a prosecution star witness, had reportedly driven the gang's 'Duppy Truck' to meet with the police at the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime division in downtown Kingston.
The vehicle is a brown Toyota Axio, which the two ex-members of the gang have both testified was dubbed the Duppy Truck as it was used only when the gang was going to carry out shootings or an execution. Yesterday, during the trial in the Home Circuit Court, an investigator recalled that the car had featured in an incident in which two men were killed by the police on January 25, 2019.
The investigator told the court that he and the lead investigator, following a briefing and after meeting with the ex-gangster the previous day, went to Martin Street in Spanish Town to prevent a shooting that was being planned by the gang. He said that while there, he saw a man in a hoodie with a firearm, who retreated. Shortly after he spotted the brown car behind his vehicle and that the men had fired at his car. The other car then drove off. He followed it before he lost sight of the vehicle.
The court was also told that during that operation, the police had been listening in on a conversation that the ex-gangster, who was driving the brown car, was having with alleged gang members. This assisted the police in keeping up with their whereabouts.
The investigator said that later, police received information and travelled to Port Henderson Road where they saw the car with bullet holes and the windshield smashed. The cop also recalled seeing two men laying lifeless, one in the car, the other along the road.
According to him, he exited his car and spoke to the police who were on the scene. When he returned, he saw the driver of the Axio, the ex-gangster turned prosecution witness, visibly shaken, sitting in the back of his service vehicle. The cop and his colleague took him to a safe house. The ex-gangster, in his statement, said that one of the men had fired at the police and he had jumped from the car and ran into a river. The trial will resume on Monday.
