No bail for murder accused with medical issue
A woman's passionate plea for bail on medical grounds was not sufficient to move Parish Judge Leighton Morris, despite her telling him that she has a "bleeding fibroid" which is causing her nightmares behind bars.
The woman, Virginia Hunter, is accused of killing her brother, following a dispute at their Kingston home earlier this month.
It is alleged that about 11 p.m. on August 11, Hunter and her mother had an argument that escalated. Hunter's mother called her son to intervene. The brother allegedly threw water on the accused, who then used a knife to stab him, resulting in his death.
In court on Wednesday, Hunter pleaded with the judge to grant her bail on medical grounds.
"Your Honour, please, I have a bleeding fibroid and I have been going to the Jubilee [Victoria Jubilee Hospital] for treatment. From last week, when I get arrested - last week Sunday - I have been telling the officer at [the lock-up]. They don't assist me to the doctor and I have been bleeding in the lock-up with the inmate, and it is very disgusting, and I supposed to do a surgery next month," Hunter submitted.
"I missed my date to go to the clinic to get my check-up. I am asking you, please kindly, if you can give me bail so that I can look about myself," the accused woman begged.
However, the presiding judge did not grant the request. He said that she should get legal representation.
"I want your lawyer here, or a lawyer here so we can discuss those in detail. What I want now is that your card can reflect that you are complaining about a fibroid issue and that you are to receive medical attention for it," Morris instructed.
Hunter was remanded in custody until September 1.
