Junior Strikers hosting 25th anniversary tourney

December 20, 2024

Junior Strikers Football Academy will celebrate its 25th anniversary this Saturday with a youth football tournament at Shortwood football field, starting at 10 a.m.

Damian McFarlane, founder of the academy, said it has a historic place in Jamaica, revealing that they also plan to launch their club in St Mary early next year.

"We are the first football academy that was started on the island, even before Ballaz, so it's very historical. And we boast many national players," he said.

"And, after our 25th anniversary, we will be launching our football club in St Mary, the Junior Strikers/Rio Nuevo Football Club. That is the next step."

Over 100 footballers from four clubs and academies, including Duhaney Park, Norbrook, Junior Strikers Academy and Praise Tab Academy, will compete in four age groups, namely under 7, 10, 12 and 15.

Teams will play each other once in each category and the top two teams after three matches will advance to the finals.

The first-place teams will receive gold medals, and second-place, silver medals. Third- and fourth-placed teams will also be rewarded, and the top scorers for the under-12 and under-15 competitions will get special awards.

McFarlane started Junior Strikers in 1999, with some of its outstanding players being junior and senior national representatives, such as Keammar 'Dada Daley, Jason Wright, Eric Vernon and female footballer Christina Salmon.

Some members of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) are expected to be in attendance, as well as a few former and national representatives.
